The Nativity: A Christmas Story
The Birth of Jesus Christ
The nativity of Jesus, also known as the birth of Jesus or the birth of Christ, is a central event in Christianity. It is documented in the biblical gospels of Luke and Matthew. The two accounts of Jesus' birth differ in some details, but they agree on the main points.
The Census of Caesar Augustus
According to the Gospel of Luke, the nativity occurred during the reign of Caesar Augustus, who issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. This census required all people to return to their ancestral home to be registered.
Mary and Joseph, who were both of the house of David, traveled from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea for the census. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the only lodging available was a stable.
The Birth of Jesus
While they were in the stable, Mary gave birth to a son. She wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger. That night, angels appeared to shepherds in the fields nearby and announced the birth of the savior.
The shepherds went to the stable and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby Jesus. They worshiped the child and spread the news of his birth.
